Problems, Programs, and Projects in College-Adult Reading; Yearbook of the Annual Meeting of the National Reading Conference (11th, Fort Worth, Texas, December 7-9, 1961).
Bliesmer, Emery P., Ed.; Staiger, Ralph C., Ed.
Focusing on problems, programs, and projects in college and adult reading, the papers in this volume were drawn from the eleventh annual meeting of the National Reading Conference held in 1961. The 29 papers are grouped into three sections, the first of which contains studies and theoretical papers that deal with reading speed and comprehension. Specific topics covered in this section include: speed, power, and comprehension; reading as linguistic behavior; mental content as a contributing and concomitant factor in reading; measurement of improvement in reading skill courses; and the future of rapid reading. The papers in the second section offer descriptions of reading programs actually in use throughout the United States. Among the specific program areas discussed are programed learning, closed circuit television, mass media, student attitudes, techniques for improving reading and learning achievement among incoming college freshmen, and vocabulary development. The third section offers papers dealing with projects and research in reading and includes discussions of the following topics: how misinterpretations of theory and research lead to errors in practice, refinement of a readability formula, the predictability of omissions in reading and listening, reading disability, and reading interests. The volume also contains a list of persons attending the conference. (FL)
