Don D. Hammill received all of his formal education in Texas schools, culminating in a doctorate in educational psychology-special education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1963. He had previously served as a teacher in the Corpus Christi (Texas) public schools and as a speech and language therapist in the Deer Park (Texas) public schools. He earned a certificate of clinical competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association in 1963. In 1988, Dr. Hammill established the Donald D. Hammill Foundation to provide a lasting impact on the Austin (Texas) metropolitan area through grants to programs serving individuals with disabilities and people who are generally disadvantaged, including the working poor and those who are indigent, chronically ill, and/or aged. This article presents an interview with Dr. Hammill on his childhood, his career as speech pathologist, and his view on the learning disabilities movement.
