Data-Driven Decision Making 2016
Ligon, Glynn D.
ERS Spectrum, v24 n4 p36-42 Fall 2006
Educators base many of their most significant decisions on what they think will happen in the future. This article on education technology begins by outlining six notable advances in education information technology that have already occurred. Ten predictions are made concerning general advances in education information technology for the next decade. For example, the space between high school and college will close; secondary students would still be enrolled in high school, but their course selections would span their own school, other high schools, technical schools, postsecondary institutions, and private corporations. Credits for "courses" at any of these would form the beginning of a life-long transcript, which would grow as the individual adds formal education, life experiences, work experiences, certifications, and licenses. In addition, 41 specific predictions are made that must occur for the general predictions to come true. These include the predictions that signing and returning papers will be replaced by web-based applications, and that every student will use handheld devices, just as textbooks are used today.
