A four-phase project was undertaken to expand adult basic education (ABE) program outreach to meet the needs of the underserved, rurally isolated, older residents of south and southwest Iowa. The first phase of the project consisted of an advisory committee project review, a series of ABE staff interviews of senior citizens residing in the area, and a needs survey. In the second phase of the project, curriculum units were developed to help the area senior citizens to (1) build their self-confidence and self-respect, (2) improve their basic skills, (3) develop a better understanding of their role as citizens, and (4) become wiser consumers. Next, a day-long inservice session was held to prepare local ABE instructors to field test the project. Formative and summative assessments of the programs attested to its success.
