Analyzes data on drug use initiation among Black, urban adolescents who were interviewed in an ongoing health study begun in 1968. Compares drug use patterns (prevalence and heaviness of use) at two life stages (ages 18-23 and 26-31). A longitudinal analysis of health care utilization by 536 urban Black youth found that between adolescence and young adulthood, males received care less and less frequently, while the opposite was true for females. These results point to the need for development of new health care provision strategies. (KH)

Describes drugs used, patterns of use, and what is currently known about sociocultural determinants of drug use among Black youth. Presents data from a longitudinal survey of Harlem youth and identifies limitations of national data available on this subject. Recommends the analysis of drug use patterns by cohort and gender.
