High-Probability Request Strategies: Practical Guidelines
Chambers, Cynthia R.
Young Exceptional Children, v9 n2 p20-28 2006
There will always be circumstances in which children do not follow adults' instructions or are unwilling to participate in certain activities. When noncompliance become recurrent, a child's functioning in home, school, and community settings can be affected. Often, these children miss out on a variety of experiences by virtue of being unengaged. The purpose of this article is to present high-probability request strategies as an effective procedure for increasing the compliance and participation of children in appropriate activities within their natural environments. First, the article describes the high-probability request strategies and their use in preschool and home settings. Next, the article reviews the evidence of the effectiveness of the strategies. The article then presents the steps for implementing the strategies and offers approaches for properly implementing them. The article ends with a brief summary of the potential benefits for young children and the adults in their lives. (Contains 2 figures.)
