Fostering Language and Literacy in Classrooms and Homes. Supporting Language Learning.
Dickinson, David K.; Tabors, Patton O.
Young Children, v57 n2 p10-18 Mar 2002
Preschool findings are summarized from a longitudinal study examining how parents and teachers support language skill development in children from low-income families from preschool through high school. The study identified three dimensions of experiences during preschool/kindergarten related to later literacy success: exposure to varied vocabulary, extended discourse, and stimulating environments. Kindergartners' language/literacy scores predicted reading comprehension and receptive vocabulary in fourth and seventh grades. (KB)
