The Light Fantastic: Making Learning Visible for All Children through the Project Approach
Harris, Kathleen I.; Gleim, Leslie
Young Exceptional Children, v11 n3 p27-40 Jun 2008
Curiosity, wonder, creativity, questions, initiation by the child, and framing by the teacher--all these characterize the project approach. Projects can be an invaluable part of any curriculum, providing opportunities for children to study subjects they find interesting in detail. Project work is not a method one uses after the "real" teaching has occurred; instead, it is a foundational approach enabling children to be self-motivated learners equipped with the skills to do in-depth investigations of topics worth learning. The investigation is usually undertaken by a small group of children within a class, sometimes by a whole class, and occasionally by an individual child. The key element of a project is that it is a research effort deliberately focused on finding answers to questions about a topic posed either by the children, the teacher, or the teacher working with the children. This article illustrates how projects can be a welcoming and enriching addition to an emerging curriculum for children with special needs. (Contains 2 tables.)
