Interruptions in Development: The Communicative Context of the Young Hospitalized Child.
Epstein, Laura T. F.; Wayman, Karen I.
Infants and Young Children, v10 n3 p32-43 Jan 1998
This study investigated the structure and content of the language that medical personnel used with 15 pediatric hospitalized patients during medical procedures, by observing in two hospital settings. Medical procedures were rarely characterized by appropriate verbal structuring. Results suggest that the unsupportive communicative environment may place hospitalized children at risk for delayed language development. Intervention strategies are suggested. (Author/DB)
