Multiple-Choice Questions with an Option to Comment: Student Attitudes and Use.
Nield, Anthony F.; Wintre, Maxine Gallander
Teaching of Psychology, v13 n4 p196-99 Dec 1986
Introductory psychology students were graded on four tests using multiple-choice format with explicit option (E-option) to explain their answers. Students preferred E-option format over regular multiple-choice, short answer, essay, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank formats. Use of E-option averaged less than one explanation per test over four tests. Only five points were lost and 30 gained as result of E-option use. (Author/JDH)
