LabWrite: Transforming Lab Reports from Busy Work to Meaningful Learning Opportunities
Ferzli, Miriam; Carter, Michael; Wiebe, Eric
Journal of College Science Teaching, v35 n3 p31 Nov-Dec 2005
Lab reports are the dreaded assignments of the laboratory course. Students dislike them, because they can be tedious and time-consuming. Instructors dislike them, because they significantly increase the grading load. For this reason, lab reports are often omitted or replaced by alternatives such as responses to lab questions, fill-in-the-blank lab manual exercises, or lab quizzes. In response to these issues, LabWrite, a free, web-based tutorial for helping students write scientifically throughout their lab experience, was developed. Funded by the National Science Foundation, LabWrite is a process-oriented tutorial, focusing on the process of science as it happens in the science laboratory. (Lists 1 resource.)
