Should We Allow Disclaimers in Textbooks? Maybe the Right Ones
French, Donald P.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v35 n5 p54-55 Mar-Apr 2006
Many scientists are concerned about efforts to place disclaimers in textbooks concerning the controversial nature of certain theories. The issues raised in such disclaimers are that a particular explanation for a set of observations may not be correct, has limitations, needs further study, and is "just a theory," may be shown, eventually, to be incorrect and could be replaced by another, better explanation. In this article, the author emphasizes the importance of disclaimers in science textbooks and that a textbook without a disclaimer is not a proper representation of science.
