Peer reviewedSunal, Dennis W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Investigated affective changes in elementary preservice teachers (N=30) during a formative period and related these changes to the development of specific classroom science teaching behaviors. (JN)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Affective Measures, Elementary Education, Elementary School Teachers
Peer reviewedMcNaught, Carmel – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Demonstrates that cognitive preferences of secondary school chemistry students (N=304) are correlated with achievement and are related to differential achievement in particular types of tasks on an achievement examination. (JN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Chemistry, Cognitive Style, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedEasley, J. A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Argues that research for teacher use would be more effective if it were: (1) of the form referred to as naturalistic case studies and (2) oriented toward discovering cognitive and social interaction mechanisms underlying the learning processes in classrooms. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education, Interaction
Peer reviewedBender, David S.; Milakofsky, Louis – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Cognitive performance of college students (N=225) on "An Inventory of Piaget: Developmental Tasks" (IPDT) was related to Scholastic Aptitude Tests and performance in both college chemistry lectures and laboratory classes. Relationship of Piagetian tasks to learning and instructional activities in introductory chemistry classes is discussed.…

Peer reviewedHowe, Ann C.; Durr, Beulah P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Level of operational thinking required (cognitive demand) for concepts or problems and test items on the mole concept was determined and compared to the Piagetian levels of thinking of 71 students. Pupil cognitive level was positively associated with overall unit test scores and with percent success on all test items. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Chemistry, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes
Peer reviewedHowe, Ann C.; Durr, Beulah – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Peer interaction combined with the use of concrete models and analogs found to enhance learning (cognitive and affective) for both formal and nonformal operational students (N=51). Instruction in control class was based on lectures, CHEM study laboratories and individual work. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Interaction
Peer reviewedLawson, Anton E.; Snitgen, Donald A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Assessed the effect of a one-semester college biology course on the development of students (N=72) ability to reason formally and interactions among intelligence, cognitive style, and cognitive level. Includes implications for science instruction. (SK)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Biology, Cognitive Style, College Science
Peer reviewedBerger, Carl F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Instrumentation, methodology, and analysis techniques were developed to measure changes in adolescents' (N=10) skills in linear distance estimation. Microcomputers were used to present and control amount of information available to assist students in said estimations. Results and implications are reported. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Computer Oriented Programs, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedKozma, Robert B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Results are reported of performance and attitudes of students (N=109) receiving high structure (objectives, reviews, examples, questions, feedback) and students (N=108) receiving low structure (emphasis on content) laboratory manuals and instructions. (SK)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Academic Aptitude, Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Chemistry
Peer reviewedRist, Ray C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Discusses key processes in conducting qualitative research: problem definition, gaining access to collect data, modes of data collection, modes of analysis, and presentation of findings. Compares qualitative with quantitative research methods. (JN)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Data Collection, Educational Research, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedEhindero, Olusola J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Spatial ability and Piagetian tasks were administered to 80 schooled/non-schooled Fulanis (primarily nomadic and hunters) and agriculturalists (living a settled life). Results indicated that Fulanis develop spatial skills adapted to the ecological demands of their lives and that schooled students performed better on Piagetian tasks than…

Peer reviewedMitchell, Harold E.; Simpson, Ronald D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Investigated (1) changes in community college students' (N=208) attitudes toward introductory biology, school, and academic self and (2) relationships between attitudes/achievement (measured by Nelson Biology Test and course grade). Data indicated that while cognitive behavior was changed during the course, attitudes either stayed the same or…

Peer reviewedGlass, Lynn W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Twenty-seven elementary teachers participated in a National Science Foundation-sponsored energy education in-service program and 27 elementary teachers served as a control group. Results from the "Energy Inventory," developed by BSCS, indicated significant changes in knowledge possessed and opinions held about energy were achieved by participants…

Peer reviewedFarmer, Walter A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Determined the degree to which classification of students (N=512) as formal or concrete based on three Inhelder tasks administered by clinical interview method was mirrored by Longeot and Karplus-Lawson-Renner (KLR) classifications. Results indicate that Longeot and KLR differentiate between concrete/formal operations and are discussed from…

Peer reviewedSearles, William E.; Ng, Raymond W. M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Questionnaires were administered to 22 principals and 41 biology teachers to determine level of agreement/disagreement when using established criteria to measure effectiveness of an outstanding biology teacher. Results indicated that principals/teachers agree on relative importance of most criteria, particularly those relating to teachers'…
