Leonard, William H.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Compares the effectiveness of an Extended Discretion (ED) laboratory approach (exercising independent judgment) to a BSCS Green Version laboratory program. Results from 10 classes taught by five teachers, each teaching one experimental and one control group, favor the ED approach on a number of measures. (Author/JN)

Gallagher, James Joseph; Yager, Robert E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Analysis of an open-ended survey of 144 university and school science educators resulted in identification of six major problem areas: conceptual, organizational, teacher-related, student-related, university-centered, and societal. (Author)

Long, Joe C.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Measured the effects of three variations in the use of diagnostic-prescriptive (DP) teaching on the cognitive and affective biology achievement of high school students (N=93). Variations included: (1) no DP assistance; (2) teacher-managed DP; and (3) student-managed DP. Results favor DP approaches. (Author/JN)

Moreira, Marco A.; Santos, Carlos A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Two approaches to the content of thermodynamics were used in an introductory college physics course: traditional organization and organization based on Ausubel's learning theory. The influence of these organizations on engineering student's (N=58) cognitive structure was investigated using a word association test analyzed through hierarchical…

Rowell, J. A.; Dawson, C. J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Summarizes a study to widen the applicability of Piagetian theory-based conflict methodology from individual situations to entire classes. A Solomon four group design was used to study effects of conflict instruction on students' (N=127) ability to conserve volume of noncompressible matter and to apply that knowledge to gas volume. Abdullah, Kemal Bin; Lowell, Walter E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reports results of a study to assess ability of children from different age groups (N=144) to generalize two hierarchically related concepts (Insect and Animal) with and without instruction in the form of a mental set. Also examined effects of age, I.Q., and sex on ability to generalize these concepts. (Author/JN)

Wright, Emmett L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reports long-term effects of intensive instruction in the cue attendance or hypothesis generation on open-exploration behavior of 120 ninth graders. Five dependent measures included: number of observed details; number and quality of hypotheses; and number and diversity of questions. Results suggest long-term benefits. (Author/JN)

Burkman, Ernest; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
The simultaneous effects of two instructional variables of degree of teacher direction (student- versus teacher-directed) and time allowed for study and the student variable of general ability are described for student achievement (N=912) in three life-science instructional modules. (Author)

Cotham, Joseph C.; Smith, Edward L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Describes the development of an instrument, for use by elementary and secondary science teachers, sensitive to alternative conceptions of particular philosophic aspects of scientific theories and which has applicability in inferring understanding of the tentative and revisionary conception of science. (DS)

Schafer, John E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reports on effects of Individualized Goal Setting (IGS) Audio Tutorial (AT) instruction compared to classic AT instruction and effects of pretesting compared to no pretesting on students' locus of control. Indicates no significant effect on students' locus of control between IGS-AT v AT or between pretesting v no pretesting. (DS)

Stronck, David R.; Koller, Geraldine R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Evaluated the effectiveness of an in-service science program, designed to introduce the Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) to 35 elementary schools, by measuring teachers' (N=168) use of living materials available from the school district's resource supply center. Findings include no significant increase in material usage by workshop…

Capie, William; Tobin, Kenneth G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
This synthesis of research in academic engagement addresses studies in several academic areas. A general relationship of teacher performance and student engagement in learning tasks is noted. Cites studies indicating a relationship between degree of engagement and achievement and suggests numerous research questions for science education…

Linn, Marcia C.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Examines content and problem effects of formal thought in 13-year-olds (N=120). Three controlling variables tasks with different content and two question-type tests (analysis and controlling questions) were administered. Findings, among others, indicate that content and problem effects contribute to variance on formal reasoning problems.…
