Okebukola, Peter A.; Ogunniyi, Meshach B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined whether significant differences exist in cognitive achievement and in the level of acquisition of practical skills among ninth-grade students (N=1025) in cooperative, competitive, and individualistic learning conditions in science laboratories. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for more productive science laboratory…

Lehman, Jeffrey R.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Explored the effects of learning on structural modifications to the periodic table; the location of a periodic table within instructional materials; and the presence of a two-page schema showing relationships between the topics explained in the written materials and the periodic table. Results obtained from 160 students are reported and discussed.…

Smith, Mike U.; Good, Ron – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Examined the problem-solving performances of novices (11 undergraduates) and experts (9 graduate students and instructors), comparing them in terms of background expertise and problem-solving success. Also examined problem-solving behaviors reported in other domains and determined whether or not genetics is a fruitful area for problem-solving…

Westerback, Mary E.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
This descriptive study was conducted to (1) measure anxiety levels of geology students (N=49) and earth science students (N=68) about taking these required departmental courses; (2) measure their general anxiety level; and (3) examine factors associated with student anxiety. Results (including those related to sex differences) are reported and…

Lehman, Jeffrey R.; Lehman, Kathleen M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined the effects of questions on the learning of 55 undergraduate education majors from case exhibits associated with a "walk-through" museum exhibit. The case exhibits contained diagrams, some specimens, a large amount of written material, but no questions. Also compared the effects of experimenter generated questions versus subject…

Westerback, Mary E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined (in separate studies conducted during 1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80, 1980-81) what changes in teachers' anxiety about teaching science occurred as preservice elementary teachers completed science courses designed to meet their professional needs. Significant findings from these studies (which used the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) are…

Farnsworth, Carolyn H.; Mayer, Victor J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Results of this study confirm discrimination of the intensive time-series design and indicate that it can be used to distinguish differences in learning (comprehension and knowledge) between eighth-grade earth science students (N=95) having formal cognitive tendencies and those having concrete cognitive tendencies. Koran, John J., Jr.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined whether natural history museum visitors (N=234) were attracted to hands-on exhibits or to identical "no-touch" exhibits. Results indicate that a significant number of visitors preferred the manipulatable settings and that children preferred to engage in hands-on experiences more than adults. Additional findings are reported and…

de Hernandez, Lilian; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined that males (N=70) demonstrate higher level of intellectual development than females (N=70), that males mature intellectually earlier than females, and that there appear to be factors other than age and sex that are related to development of formal operational reasoning. Implications of these and other results are discussed. (JN)

Leonard, William H.; Lowery, Lawrence F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined relative effects of rhetorical, factual, valuing, and hypothesizing question types when these questions were interspersed throughout the reading passage in textual materials for students (N=383) in introductory biology. Reported results are based on a 20-item test given immediately after reading the passage, 2 weeks later, and 9 weeks…

Wollman, Warren; Lawrenz, Frances – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Investigated whether dropouts and other students having difficulty with physics could be identified by including mathematics reasoning items along with mathematics skill items on a 13-item mathematics pretest and by using records of past performance in conjunction with the pretest. Sample included 483 students in an introductory, noncalculus,…

Erb, Thomas Owen; Smith, Walter S. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
"Women in Science Scale," a 27-item instrument for measuring adolescents' attitudes toward women in science careers, was determined to be reliable by estimates of internal consistency (alpha = 0.92) and stability over time (r = 0.82). The instrument also clearly distinguishes between scores of males and females regardless of sex. (JN)

Wollman, Warren – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Female education majors in a physical science course were given a set of tasks analogous to a given, solved prototype-task to investigate how transfer items were handled. Also used a conceptual model along with the solved prototype and a general procedure for applying the conceptual model to the transfer items. (Author/JN)

Lawson, Anton E.; Bealer, Jonathan M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Five items requiring use of proportional, probabilistic, and correlational reasoning were administered to students (N=391) in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. Argues that successful qualitative reasoning arises as a consequence of equilibration and influences selection of course work and that specific instruction may initiate the equilibration process.…

Harty, Harold; Beall, Dwight – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
The "Children's Science Curiosity Scale" is composed of 30 Likert-like items which examine various curiosity factors in the context of science learning. Internal consistency, test-retest reliabilities, and validity of the instrument were investigated. Sex differences using the instrument were also investigated. (JN)
