Peer reviewedSayre, Steve; Ball, Daniel W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
This investigation explored the relationship between scholastic grades in science in junior and senior high school students and ability of students to perform formal operational tasks. The findings indicated that at certain grade levels and in certain subject areas, public school science students who demonstrate formal operational logic tend to…

Peer reviewedBrooks, Marshall; Hounshell, Paul B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
The locus of control construct referred to in this study describes a distribution of individuals on a continuum according to the degree to which they accept personal responsibility for what happens to them. This study showed that for first grade children the interactions between a student's locus of control and his classroom environment may…

Peer reviewedChiappetta, Eugene L.; Collette, Alfred T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
A sample of 43 second grade pupils was divided into groups which performed classificatory tasks with value labels, attribute labels, or a combination of these. Results showed that the value labeling improved the students' classificatory skills and increased the students' ability to generalize classificatory skill on far transfer tests. (MLH)

Peer reviewedDietz, Maureen A.; Barufaldi, James P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
This study investigated whether the familiarity of an object observed by an individual influences his responses on observation and comparison tasks. Results indicated no significant differences between the number of observations of ordinary objects and the number of observations of novel objects. (MLH)

Peer reviewedVoelker, Alan M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Reports on a replication study to determine the relative effectiveness of two methods of instruction in teaching classificatory concepts and to determine whether maturity of children was related to level of understanding. (GS)

Peer reviewedHuston, Peter H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Value orientations of students were investigated as a function of measured intelligence, general academic average, chemistry grade and sex. Value orientations of teachers were investigated as a function of level of university chemistry preparation, level of teaching experience, and biology teaching involvement. (GS)

Peer reviewedLinn, Marcia C.; Thier, Herbert D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Reports a study undertaken to determine the effect of the Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) on logical thinking. Evidence of logical thinking was measured as the ability to explain compensating variables that occurred in a cart experiment presented on silent 16 mm film. (GS)
Descriptors: Curriculum Evaluation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Learning Theories
Peer reviewedKahle, Jane Butler; Nordland, Floyd H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Investigates the differential effect of an advanced organizer on the meaningful learning and retention of information presented to the learner in a sequential, structured program of individualized instruction. (Author/GS)

The Effect of Different Modes of Task Orientation on Observational Attainment in Practical Chemistry
Peer reviewedKempa, R. F.; Ward, J. E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Examines the effect of three different modes of task orientation on observational attainment in practical chemistry. Results include the overall performance on the chemistry observation test and an analysis of the influence of the complexity of observational tasks on observational attainment. (Author/GS)
