Sets, Subsets, and the Empty Set: Students' Constructions and Mathematical Conventions.
Zazkis, Rina; Gunn, Chris
Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, v16 n1 p133-69 1997
Investigates students' understanding of the basic concepts of introductory set theory which are set, set element, cardinality, subset, and the empty set. Data was collected from preservice elementary school teachers. The project included experimentation with basic set concepts in an open computer-based environment using the mathematical computer language ISETL. A constructivist-oriented framework was used in analyzing the data. (AIM)
