Discusses postwar social studies reform in England in terms of the social studies movement (1940-50), the new social studies movement (1960-70), and the political education movement (late 1970s). Argues that the movements are limited because of their inadequate understanding of the relationship between schooling and society and the nature of the broader societal context in which they have been working.
