Sociocultural Influences on Physics Students' Use of Proportional Reasoning in a Non-Western Country.
Akatugba, Ayo A.; Wallace, John
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, v36 n3 p305-20 Mar 1999
Key aspects of student difficulty with proportional reasoning can be understood only when the social and cultural contexts in which it is embedded are considered. A constructivist, interpretive case study provided insights into physics students' associations between cultural heritage, world views, societal expectations, authoritarianism, upbringing, customs and traditions, language, everyday life, and students' use of proportional reasoning in physics.
