The Epistemological Framing of a Discipline: Writing Science in University Oceanography.
Kelly, Gregory J.; Chen, Catherine; Prothero, William
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, v37 n7 p691-718 Sep 2000
Examines how instruction in scientific writing in a university oceanography course communicated epistemological positions of the discipline. Uses an ethnographic perspective to explore how teachers and students came to define particular views of disciplinary knowledge. Identifies epistemological issues such as uses of evidence, role of expertise, relevance of point of view, and limits to authority of disciplinary inquiry. (Contains 71 references.) (Author/ASK)
