Standards-Based Reform and Its Unintended Consequences: Implications for Science Education within America's Urban Schools.

Examines the influence of current standards-based reform upon science education policies and practices within urban schools. Identifies four negative effects of the reform movement: (1) undermining urban teachers' professionalism; (2) eroding teacher-student relationships; (3) diluting the science curriculum; and (4) disparate instruction based upon predicted individual test performance.
