Winslow, Mark W.; Staver, John R.; Scharmann, Lawrence C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2011
The goal of this study was to explore Christian biology-related majors' perceptions of conflicts between evolution and their religious beliefs. This naturalistic study utilized a case study design of 15 undergraduate biology-related majors at or recent biology-related graduates from a mid-western Christian university. The broad sources of data…

Wang, Jianjun; Oliver, J. Steve; Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2008
Science achievement and self-concept are articulated in this study to examine a model of reciprocal relationship during a crosscultural transition. Trend data have been gathered to assess changes of the perceived English importance before and after Hong Kong's sovereignty handover from Britain to China. The data analyses were conducted four times…

Kelly, Michael P.; Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2005
In this investigation we employed a case study approach with qualitative and quantitative data sources to examine and discover the characteristics of the processes used by a midwestern U.S. school system to adopt and implement a new K-6 science curriculum. Analysis of data yielded several results. Elementary teachers received what they requested,…

Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Supports the assertion that constructivism is a sound theory that explains the practice of science and science pedagogy, and responds to critics of constructivism. Offers a constructivist account of some long-standing epistemological issues. Contains 40 references. (DDR)

Wang, Jianjun; Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1996
Explores a possible model for the prediction of students' science achievement in China and the United States based on the ninth-grade database from Phase II of the Second IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Science Achievement) Science Study (SISS). Compares the structure of latent factors and model complexity between the two…

Staver, John R.; Gabel, Dorothy L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
The goal of the study is to describe the development and validation of a cognitive development test. The test fulfills the criteria of (1) logical equivalence of test items and the mental logic of Piagetian tasks; (2) reliability and validity of the group measure; and (3) efficient, objective assessment. (RE)

Staver, John R.; Harty, Harold – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Designs a testing situation to examine the presence of combinatorial analysis, to establish construct validity in the use of an instrument, Combinatorial Analysis Behavior Observation Scheme (CABOS), and to investigate the presence of the schema in young adolescents. (Author/GA)

Staver, John R.; Halsted, Douglas A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Determined the effects of reasoning, use of models during testing, and sex type on posttest achievement in chemical bonding under controlled instruction. Indicates that chemistry students' (N=84) reasoning capabilities influenced performance; other variables were not significant. Other conclusions are noted and discussed. (DH)

Staver, John R.; Walberg, Herbert J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Data on 30,030 sophomores in the "High School and Beyond" project were analyzed to test the private school superiority hypothesis for science achievement. The supposition that private schools are superior to public schools in producing science achievement is rejected. Other factors related to achievement are noted and discussed. (JN)

Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Reviews an investigation of the effects of problem format and the number of independent variables on the responses of students to a control of variables reasoning task. Results indicate that adding independent variables to a control of variables reasoning problem leads to an overload of working memory which affects performance. (ML)

Staver, John R.; Bay, Mary – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Examines 11 elementary science texts in terms of conceptual structure and reasoning demands using concept maps. Reports that (1) the conceptual structures vary widely across texts; (2) most of the structures are well defined; and (3) the reasoning demands are above the developmental capabilities of most of primary-level children. Staver, John R.; Jacks, Tom – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1988
Investigates the influence of five cognitive variables on high school students' performance on balancing chemical equations by inspection. Reports that reasoning, restructuring, and disembedding variables could be a single variable, and that working memory capacity does not influence overall performance. Results of hierarchical regression analysis…

Staver, John R.; Pascarella, Ernest T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined effects of various methods and formats of administering a Piagetian task on college students' (N=376) performance. Concludes neither method nor format influenced subject performance; and this lack of influence is similar for various combinations of method and format. Importance of this finding and implications for teachers are…

Staver, John R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Determined effects of various methods and formats on subjects' (N=253) responses to a Piagetian reasoning problem requiring control of variables. Results indicate that format but not method of task administration influences subjects' performance and that the influence is similar for various combinations of methods and format. (Author/JN)

Staver, John R.; Bay, Mary – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study designed to examine selected units of commonly used elementary science texts, using the Project Synthesis goal clusters as a framework for part of the examination. The discussion of the finding focuses on the comparison of the results to recommendations of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). (TW)
