The Two Cultures of Academe
Mattson, Kevin; Bernt, Joseph
Academe, v94 n4 p54-57 Jul-Aug 2008
In this article, the authors argue that huge administrative salaries are bad for morale and for higher education's image. They discuss the results of their study on the current salary of all members of their university. The authors found out that in the past two years, the salaries of professors had flat lined, not always keeping up with inflation. But the salaries of the university's top 35 administrators--president, provost, a slew of vice presidents, and deans--had grown exponentially. This report created havoc in the university and showed the disparity of cultures in the academe.
