Writing Reconsidered: Redefining Composition Scholarship in the Corporate University
Latta, Susan
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v32 n1 p53-63 Sep 2004
Compositionists are, and have been, dedicated to many of the recommendations proposed in Ernest Boyer's "Scholarship Reconsidered." His concepts of application, integration, and teaching, as well as the traditional definition of research as discovery, are perspectives and practices that compositionists have held for some time. Boyer makes good arguments concerning the reimagining of scholarship, and the field of English, and especially compositionists, have taken his recommendations seriously. However, the commitment to "serviceableness," as Boyer defines it, may have worked to the detriment of compositionists, because the academic environment has changed radically in the last twenty years, and a key force in this change has been the move to run colleges and universities on a corporate model. A better understanding of these corporate management strategies and their effect on academia is needed in order to make the case for the importance of the field of composition.
