Encourage Students to Read through the Use of Data Visualization
Bandeen, Heather M.; Sawin, Jason E.
College Teaching, v60 n1 p38-39 2012
Instructors are always looking for new ways to engage students in reading assignments. The authors present a few techniques that rely on a web-based data visualization tool called Wordle (wordle.net). Wordle creates word frequency representations called word clouds. The larger a word appears within a cloud, the more frequently it occurs within a given text. Although the use of word clouds is no substitute for reading, they can provide a useful foundation for prereading discussions with students. To demonstrate how this tool might be used, the authors transformed a famous document: the Declaration of Independence. They subsequently list a few ways that word clouds can be used to engage students in prereading discussions. (Contains 1 figure.)
