The South Carolina Impact Study, a formal research project designed to describe the effects of changing patterns of institutional and student financing on postsecondary enrollments, is described. It has as its objectives to: (1) examine the enrollment patterns and characteristics of the September freshman classes of 1972 and 1977; (2) relate identifiable changes to recognizable influences, including changes in federal, state, and institutional financial aid offerings and to other policies and practices that might affect enrollment patterns; (3) formulate findings so as to maximize their utility for specific audiences (such as legislators, college planners, and state agencies); and (4) disseminate findings actively. This second report describes the results of a survey administered to a stratified random sample of South Carolina undergraduate students on campuses in the state during the spring of 1978. The survey instrument was the Student Resource Survey, a questionnaire developed by the College Board. Students were surveyed at seven types of institutions: predominantly white four-year public colleges, the predominantly Black four-year public college, the two-year regional campuses, the predominantly Black and predominantly white four-year private colleges, two-year private colleges, and the Technical Education Center campuses. Four of ten responded. Data are included on: respondents' general personal, academic, and financial circumstances; costs; family resources used in defraying costs; the role of financial aid; various patterns of student financing at the different types of institutions; and the students reasons for their college choices.
