Academic Enrichment Programs for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Children: A Service-Learning Experience
Szente, Judit
Childhood Education, v85 n2 p113 Win 2008
In this article, the author introduces a service-learning component that enabled her to create a meaningful university-school relationship. This reciprocal relationship allowed her students to contribute over 1,500 hours of academic tutoring for culturally and linguistically diverse children in central Florida, benefiting not only children, but also educators, college students, and the community. In addition, this project enables students to experience ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) teaching strategies and develop/utilize skills in cross-cultural communication.
