A brief overview on collective bargaining in higher education, data illustrating the growth of collective bargaining, and practical guidelines to help univeristy administrators carry out their responsibilities in the collective bargaining context are presented. The data were obtained from the May 31, 1977 and January 9, 1978 editions of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Summary data are presented on election of bargaining agents for two-year and four-year public and private colleges. Summaries of recent contract settlements for five universities are also included. A text on faculty collective bargaining and a 1977 study on governance in institutions with faculty unions are noted. (SW)
