Microcomputer Use in Learning Disabilities Programs at California Community Colleges.
Robledo, Gilbert
A study was conducted to gather information about the use of microcomputers within the learning disabilities (LD) programs in California community colleges. Surveys were sent to all 106 two-year colleges in the state, requesting information on the number of students enrolled in LD programs, the kind and number of computers used in the LD programs, computer availability to students and LD instructors, microcomputing plans, decision making, funding sources, cooperation with other departments, ways in which the computers are used, and use of or interest in particular computer programs. Study findings, based on responses from 43 colleges, included the following: (1) 20 of the colleges had medium-sized programs, serving between 60 and 95 LD students; (2) very few of the colleges were serving limited- or non-English-speaking students in their LD programs; (3) 27 of the colleges reported that their LD students had their own microcomputers at home; (4) 35 colleges reported that they utilized microcomputers within their LD programs, with a range of one to five microcomputers per program; (5) 24 of the respondents did not feel that their faculty was sufficiently knowledgeable about microcomputers; and (6) 15 colleges indicated that microcomputers were being used to support the activities of LD faculty for both instructional and noninstructional purposes. The survey instrument is provided. (AYC)
