Urban STEM Education: A Unique Summer Experience
White, David W.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v72 n5 p8-13 Feb 2013
In April of 2010, the author was approached to write a proposal that would provide grant money for a summer program to take place at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's Developmental Research School (FAMU DRS). The FAMU DRS functions as a normal K-12 school; however, it is administered by the Florida A&M University College of Education. If approved, the funding would allow 7th-12th grade students from low-income school districts to attend the program for free. At the time the author was told was there was an interest in developing a program at the FAMU DRS that would have a technology and engineering component. His interest was piqued, and he agreed to get involved. The result was a unique program that provided over 120 African American students over a two-year period the opportunity to learn about technology and engineering in a STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) atmosphere, to promote technological literacy, and to expose the students to academic and career paths within STEM-related disciplines. It was the author's hope that this would be a unique pipeline to recruit students into STEM fields by making them aware of careers in STEM and engaging in STEM activities. (Contains 1 table.)
