Problem-Solving Support for English Language Learners
Wiest, Lynda R.
Teaching Children Mathematics, v14 n8 p479-484 Apr 2008
Although word problems pose greater language demands, they also encourage more meaningful problem solving and mathematics understanding. With proper instructional support, a student-centered, investigative approach to contextualized problem solving benefits all students. This article presents a lesson built on an author-adapted version of the classic Chicken and Pigs word problem. The type of support discussed in this article demonstrates an approach that is particularly important for better serving the English language learners in American classrooms. (Contains 3 figures.)
