An Exploration of the Relationship between ESL Students' Backgrounds and Their English and Academic Achievement.
Gunderson, Lee; Clarke, Debra K.
National Reading Conference Yearbook, v47 p264-73 1998
Finds that literacy experience in a first or second language promoted the underlying interdependent proficiency base. Supports the "Common Underlying Proficiency" model, and suggests that these underlying proficiencies may vary relative to the orthography of the first language. Finds that students were achieving academically, whereas their second-language-literacy skills were two or more years below grade level. (SR)
