As the third phase of a project designed to develop a system for statewide follow-up of postsecondary vocational education, a study was conducted to develop instruments that would provide data for the employability assessment of the graduates from vocational programs. The instruments were designed to answer two questions: Are the students prepared upon graduation to enter the world of work? and In biographic terms such as age, sex, and marital status, what is the profile of students leaving postsecondary vocational education in South Dakota? The resulting instruments consisted of five questionnaires: a student exit questionnaire, first- and fifth-year student questionnaires, and first- and fifth-year employer questionnaires. Significant findings were these: Of the 887 first- and fifth-year students who returned questionnaires indicating employment, 783 were either working in the field for which they were trained, a related field, or were self-employed; less than one-half of the respondents indicated that they were advancing; students tended to rate their programs and general instructional personnel above average; and employers tended to be only slightly more critical than the graduates when evaluating the employee's preparedness for entry into the occupation. Results relating to job preparedness indicated need for identification of other variables involved. (Author/BM)
