This guide was designed to provide students with information on choosing a career and finding a job. Chapter 1 discusses the importance of self-understanding in career choice, job change, and the improvement of job performance; explores methods of self-evaluation and self-development; and lists pertinent resources. Chapter 2 focuses on the importance of investigating careers, explaining how to gather and evaluate career information, how to prepare for and conduct information-gathering interviews, and ways to obtain necessary training. The steps involved in making a career decision are identified in chapter 3 as defining the problem, gathering information, generating alternatives, evaluating and eliminating alternatives, making an action plan, and evaluating the career decision. Chapter 4 discusses job hunting in terms of locating job openings and preparing resumes and cover letters. Chapter 5 helps students prepare for interviews and offers guidelines for writing thank you letters, deciding among offers, and writing letters of acceptance or rejection. Chapter 6 presents suggestions for getting along on the job, considering common mistakes made in a new job, characteristics of successful employees, relationships with co-workers, and good work habits. Examples of self-inventories, resumes and cover letters, and a list of negative factors in job interviews are included. (DAB)
