This study examines the theatrical and thematic aspects of Kabuki and provides recommendations for using these aspects in the production of plays by Shakespeare. Sequences from "Hamlet,""Macbeth," and "Julius Caesar" were chosen because they are adaptable to Kabuki design. In order to help a director view these plays in terms of Kabuki, an interpretation of each sequence is presented; staging recommendations are made through descriptive passages and line citations as if the sequences are being witnessed by the reader in an actual kabuki production. Since Kabuki acting style is dance-like and athletic, the actor must be in excellent physical condition and must undergo specialized training. Accordingly, judo and karate are recommended training techniques, partly because of the generic relationship between Japanese acting and martial art. This study also discusses the relation of martial arts training to the Stanislavski acting method. (Author/DI)
