The literature on evaluation of the quality of instructors' teaching suggests that the techniques of that evaluation can be grouped in four categories: (1) student opinion, (2) opinion of colleagues, (3) the instructor's opinion of himself, and (4) evidence of professional improvement. Although there is opposition from certain sides, evaluation of instructors by students is increasing in the United States. The growing body of literature on this subject indicates that the students are quite able to express reasonably sound judgment on their teachers. In this article, the author presents a composite plan of evaluation that incorporated self-evaluation and evaluation by students and colleagues, for which he uses a 10-item checklist. The procedure can be used for many administrative purposes: periodic promotion, interviews between administrator and instructor, merit raises, etc. (Author/HH)
