Designed for use as supplementary instructional material in a cultural anthropology course, this learning module uses a systems approach to allow students to see the connections and similarities which most cultural groups share on the basis of the type of economic organization that they exhibit. The module begins with a general discussion of economics, systems theory in cultural anthropology, and the use of models. The bulk of the module applies a generalized model of economic organization to hunting and gathering, pastoral, and horticultural forms of economic organization. These economic systems are described in terms of: (1) population size; (2) range of material culture, including transportation, manufacturing tools, raw materials, diet, shelter, clothing, food processing, ritual objects, children's items, musical instruments, recreational traits, art, and utilitarian-personal traits; (3) non-material culture; (4) ritual behaviors and belief systems; (5) social groups; (6) communication; (7) political traits; (8) kinship; (9) medicine; and (10) sexual behavior.
