Metadiscourse and the Evasive Narrator: A Process-Based Approach to Teaching Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day."
Davies, Diane
Reading in a Foreign Language, v12 n1 p271-80 Aut 1998
Explores the application of a process-based methodology in reading of recent fictional text, Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day," with international undergraduates. Illustrated by practical tasks on narrative voice designed to build awareness of metadiscursive markers and their functions, this article makes a case for a methodology that is stylistic in focus, but that can lay the foundation for class discussions that go beyond style.
