The far-reaching liberalization of both written and spoken language since the Second Edition of "Webster's New International" is reflected in the usage of professional writers. Consequently, the label "colloquial" has become unnecessary as a dictionary classification, especially since sharp distinctions between formal and informal language usage are not always clear. Examples of specific word changes connected with the Third Edition are the spelling of "all right" and "callus" and the inclusion of "gimmick,""corny," and "spendiferous" as acceptable rather than slang.
