Intended to help educators develop a philosophy and understanding for working with learning disabled adults, this document consists of an introduction, 11 chapters, a 76-item bibliography, materials and resource suggestions, and three appendices. The introduction provides an overview of learning disabled adults. The chapters include (1) information on the characteristics of learning disabled people; (2) adult learning theory and intervention as they relate to the learning disabled; (3) the importance of psychosocial adjustment; (3) a suggested process for diagnosis and assessment; (4) a review of diagnostic tests; (5) descriptions of the four approaches used to help adults learn to read; (6) 64 tips for instructors working with disabled learners; (7) techniques designed to help both instructors and learners track progress in a program; (8) tips for helping learning disabled community college students with auditory or visual deficits or more general kinds of learning disabilities; (9) a description of the employment problems that learning disabled adults frequently have and the conditions under which they are eligible for vocational rehabilitation services; and (10) educational implications and recommendations for the future. Appendix A contains the results of a 1987 survey of the training levels and needs of adult basic education instructors working at learning centers throughout Kansas.
