This syllabus introduces the purposes and organization of a course on Popular Culture as evidence of American civilization offered at Meramec Community College. The guide first presents a rationale for the study of popular culture and then lists course requirements; discusses techniques such as comparative analysis and psychoanalytic investigation used in the study of popular culture; outlines relevant historical periods; and cites definitions of popular culture. A glossary for the course is followed by a list of possible topics for a research project. An outline is then presented of the elements of each of the 14 course topics and the objectives for each topic: (1) Faith and Religion, (2) The Land and What We Build, (3) Mythology, (4) Men and Women, (5) Heroes--American Style, (6) Villains, (7) Communications, (8) Our Literature, (9) Our Music--The Popular Song, (10) The Visual Arts, (11) Transportation, (12) Gimmicks and Gadgets, (13) Recreation, and (14) Hang-Ups. The guide concludes with a selected bibliography of periodicals and one of monographs grouped according to the 14 topics. (JP)
