A project conducted by Northampton Community College established an automated manufacturing training center for use by industry in eastern Pennsylvania. The center assists small and medium-size manufacturing firms in evaluating and integrating off-the-shelf technology to make them more competitive in the global marketplace. Comprehensive services include demonstration, training, access to consultant services, and use of technical facilities. Project activities were as follows: (1) setting up a laboratory for training and demonstration; (2) developing and piloting a training assessment model in three firms; (3) developing and piloting a comprehensive matrix of training modules for management, engineers and technicians, supervisors, maintenance personnel, and production operators involving 25 companies; (4) offering a technological literacy training program to 100 school personnel; (5) developing industry-specific training videotapes; and (6) marketing the program to area manufacturers. The program was strongly supported by local industry and was considered a success by those involved in it.
