Preferred Learning Styles: A Design for Future Curricula.
Griffin, Thomas E.
This document describes a course for self-discovery of learning style preferences offered to students and faculty of Central Piedmont Community College (North Carolina). The course was based on the theory of Educational Sciences and cognitive style mapping developed by Joseph E. Hill. PLS 9000, Preferred Learning Styles, was a nine contact-hour course of four week duration. During the second session, a 219-item test of cognitive style eliciting learning style preferences was given. Other sessions were devoted to discussing and analyzing the conceptual framework of preferred learning style and cognitive mapping. Each participant analyzed his own maps of major and minor orientations to symbols and their meanings, cultural determinants, and modalities of inference--the three elements of cognitive style. Because student learning styles varied widely and participants reacted favorably, the author recommends that more attention be given to individualized learning styles in future curriculum design and that more courses offering individuals opportunities for self-discovery be explored. The class plan and schedule for PLS 9000, sample test questions, sample cognitive maps, the course evaluation questionnaire, and copies of all curriculum materials used in the course are appended.
