Since May 1991, College of the Canyons (CoC) in California, has conducted annual surveys of the registered nursing graduates. As of May 1994, 160 surveys have been distributed and 100 completed surveys have been received. An analysis of responses over the 4-year period and comparisons between years indicate the following: (1) 87.9% of the respondents indicated that they would select a nursing major again if starting over; (2) 89.9% indicated CoC was their first choice when they enrolled; (3) 50.5% reported that they chose CoC for its location, while 26.3% chose it for the quality of the program; (4) 29.3% attended CoC for 3 years, 26.3% for 2 years, and 16.25 for 4 years; (5) 56.1% reported grade point averages (GPA's) of 3.0 to 3.4, 36.7% reported GPA's of 3.5 to 4.0, and 7.1% reported GPA's of 2.0 to 2.9; (6) 97.9% were employed in the field, 80.9% of these were employed full-time, and the largest percentage of alumni employed full-time received a salary of $30,000 to $39,999; (7) 15 alumni reported that they had enrolled at another educational institution after graduation, with most stating that they were more than adequately prepared; (8) the number of male graduates has increased from 0 in 1990 to 28 (14.3% of graduates) in 1993; (9) the percentage of graduates employed at the time of the survey has decreased from 100% in 1990 to 78.6% in 1993; and (10) 36% rated their preparation for their job as excellent in 1993, up from 10% in 1992, but down from 50% in 1990.
