The Santa Ana College (SAC) Research Office cataloging system based on ERIC subject descriptors and on an internally developed document source and author index is described. Each document entering the office is assigned a classification number which includes a subject index code, a source index code, the publication date, and a unique sequence number from which computerized document listings by subject index number, source, and alphabetic titles are generated. SAC's subject classification derives from the Descriptor Group Display in "The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors". The system advantages include ease of locating items within the system and of conducting searches, the ability to generate periodic current document listings to keep the administration and staff up-dated, and improvement of the Institutional Research Office image and reputation due to the retrieval efficiency of the taxonomic classification. System disadvantages are identified: subjectivity in subject index coding and a problem with no margin for coding errors. Future system plans involve developing an on-line file maintenance and search operation to facilitate document processing and eliminate some processing errors. (TR)
