The Learning Needs of Adults in Hill County, Texas.
Hutchins, Elbert C.
A survey was conducted to determine the conditions surrounding adult learning in the area served by Hill Junior College (Texas). Of a sample of 750 local residents, 351 persons (47.8%) responded. Selected sample characteristics were compared with 1970 census data to determine that findings were generalizable to the total population. Respondents tended to be married (72.9%), 51.9% were not supporting children at home, and 69% were employed at least part-time. Most (61.2%) were 35 years or older, 59% had yearly incomes above $10,000, and 27.1% had at least a baccalaureate degree. Desire to learn was expressed by 73.2%, an attitude expressed by 41% of the women compared with 32.1% of the men. Subject area choices included the following: home and family, 66.5%; hobbies and recreation, 51.5%; personal development, 47.5%; vocational subjects, 34.6%; general education, 27.9%; and public affairs, 26.5%. Almost two-thirds of the respondents preferred credit, 65.8% wanted to attend class one to two evenings weekly, 52% were willing to spend at least a semester in study, 68% preferred alternate instructional methods, and 88.7% expected to pay for instruction. Personal enrichment and vocational advancement were the primary reasons for continuing learning. The questionnaire is appended. (RT)
