Alternative Learning Experiences: A Handbook for Contract Learning.
Deiro, Judy
This workbook was designed to aid students at Whatcom Community College in writing learning contracts for independent study. The workbook first explains the purpose of the contract, which specifies what is to be learned, how the learning will take place, and the methods of evaluation to be used. Procedures, guidelines, and illustrations are then presented for each of six steps in writing the contract: (1) specifying precise learning objectives; (2) specifying learning activities, such as travel, reading, or interviews; (3) specifying methods of evaluation (e.g., papers, tests, or self-evaluation); (4) compiling a bibliography of books or other materials to be used; (5) determining the amount of credit to be granted; and (6) securing faculty approval of the contract. Finally, the workbook provides short answers for 22 questions likely to be asked by students. These questions relate to limitations on credits; contract completion; time limitations and extensions; contract revisions; faculty mentor selection, role, and salary; contracts that parallel offered courses; registration; transfer of credit; restrictions to receivers of veteran's benefits; off-campus learning experiences; and grading policies. The appendix includes self-evaluation guidelines, an outline of the responsibilities of students and faculty in the independent learning process, and sample contracts. (JP)
