This is a study of the dropout rate during the 1998-99 academic year at Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). A total of 1,025 of 7,174 students (14%) withdrew from their program of study before the end of the year. This report categorizes the reasons for leaving as follows: (1) exited by institute; (2) personal reasons; (3) financial reasons; (4) health reasons; (5) employment reasons; (6) deceased; (7) reason not given; and (8) other reason. (These categories were found to be too broad, and were then expanded into 24 different categories.) The top three reasons for withdrawal from the SIAST system were: (1) exited by institute; (2) failed requirements; and (3) absenteeism. The campus with the highest withdrawal rate was Woodland Meadow Lake, with a withdrawal rate of 49%. The top three reasons for withdrawal at Woodland were: (1) absenteeism; (2) employment; and (3) exited by institute. Sixteen percent of first-year students withdrew from their programs, while only 3% of third-year students withdrew. Twenty-three percent of all systemwide dropouts were exited by the institution, while 9% chose to leave because of program difficulty. Twenty percent of the total dropout rate was in the technology division, while 7% of leavers were in nursing. The study found that there is a correlation between withdrawal and the length of the program. (NB)
