The Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act requires institutions of higher education to disclose information about graduation and completion rates to current and prospective students. To be counted as a completion, a student must have graduated or transferred to a higher-level program within 150% of the normal time of completion, and have received substantial preparation for their new program. At Prince George's Community College (PGCC), in Maryland, African Americans in the 1986-1989 cohorts had an average completion rate of 12%. For Asian Americans, this figure was 32%, Hispanic Americans 22%, Native Americans 5%, White Americans 36%, and non-resident aliens 11%. In all racial/ethnic groups except Hispanic Americans, women had higher completion rates than men. Completion rates were also available for two cohorts of students receiving athletically related financial aid at PGCC: student athletes entering in 1989-90 (N=42) and those entering in 1990-91 (N=71). The highest completion rates were achieved by men receiving aid to play basketball or baseball, with 80% of these athletes graduating or transferring to a senior institution within 3 years of entering PGCC. The category with the lowest completion rate (47%) was women's "all other sports." Completion rates for each degree-seeking cohort and for student athletes by sport are presented in tabular form.
