Reconsiders the community college's "cooling out" function in higher education and the less desirable alternatives of preselection, transfer-track selection, open failure, guaranteed graduation, reduction of transfer-terminal distinctions, and elimination of two-year colleges. Reviews literature using and abusing the "cooling out" concept. Suggests changes in the study which originally identified the concept. (GB)
